Saint Joseph's University, also known as SJU or St. Joe's, is a private, coeducational Roman Catholic Jesuit university located partially in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia and partially in Lower Merion Township, in the US state of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia is the county seat of Philadelphia County, the largest city in the state and the 6th most populous city in USA, having a population estimated at a number of more than 1.5 million inhabitants, fact which also makes it the nation's fourth-largest urban area by population and its fourth-largest consumer media market as ranked by the Nielsen Media Research.
SJU was founded in 1851, as by the Society of Jesus, as Saint Joseph's College, being recognized as a university by the Secretary of Education of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on July 24, 1978. Since 2001, St. Joe's has grown in physical size and scope, for the 2010 U.S. News and World Report rankings, being placed on the 10th spot, in the Master's Universities (North) category.
Each year, SJU enrolls a number of more than 8500 students, educating them in over 60 undergraduate majors, 12 special-study options, 28 study-abroad programs, 53 graduate study areas, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, all the educational programs being provided through 17 centers and institutes. For its educational programs, Saint Joseph's University has been highly ranked by numerous significant publications, being ranked 8th among Best Universities-Master’s (North) in both U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Colleges 2008" and "2009" editions, The Princeton Review naming it one of "The Best 143 Business Schools" in 2007 and one of the best 290 in 2008.
SJU's athletic teams are known as the Saint Joseph's Hawks, who compete in 20 varsity sports in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the teams being part of the Atlantic Ten Conference, also competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, for men's lacrosse, due to the fact that the Atlantic 10 does not support that sport. The most popular sport at the university is men's basketball, in which the teams have competed in nineteen NCAA Tournaments, between 1959 and 2008, winning seven Atlantic 10 regular season titles and two A-10 tournament championships, the men's basketball team being ranked 33rd all time with a .605 winning percentage.
